Mental wellbeing volunteer opportunities for students

Whether you’re new to volunteering or already passionate about student wellbeing, there’s a place for you here.

Being a mental wellbeing volunteer can take many forms. There are several ways to get involved, and we believe in the power of online volunteering for students. Our Peer+ Student Volunteering Program is a flexible way to help others without big, rigid commitments.

You can support our global student community by lending a listening ear as a Buddy from home, on campus, or even from your morning bus - wherever you feel comfortable.

If you’d like to make an impact directly on your campus, we also offer the TalkCampus Student Ambassador Program. As an Ambassador, you’ll be at the forefront of a growing movement for student wellbeing on your own campus.

Becoming a Buddy on TalkCampus

TalkCampus buddies are users who have trained with us to be a peer supporter on the platform. Being a buddy means becoming a listening ear in our global student communities. Here are some of the tasks you'd be performing:

  • Welcoming new people and ensuring we are a warm, supportive environment for those taking their first steps to talking and sharing
  • Commenting on posts and using your supportive skills to convey empathy and help people feel heard
  • Setting up your own rooms on TalkCampus and helping people feel connected with each other
  • Offering one-to-one buddy support to someone who is struggling

Becoming a Student Ambassador on your campus

TalkCampus Student Ambassadors are students who step up and advocate for student wellbeing on their own campus and help guide students who feel lonely and isolated towards TalkCampus. Here are some of the tasks you'd be performing:

  • Building a team of five students who are passionate about wellbeing
  • Creating and delivering your own engagement missions from campus events to online campaigns to promote TalkCampus
  • Representing TalkCampus on your campus, becoming a recognised voice in student wellbeing

Student volunteer training

As a TalkCampus student volunteer, you'll get an introductory call and receive full training before starting your duties. You will also get access to a volunteer Slack group and receive continuous support from our internal team and other volunteers. You will also get monthly clinical supervision where you can meet other buddies from around the globe.

Please note volunteering and mental wellbeing services are very different responsibilities and we do not expect you to act as a counselor or deal with crisis situations. If you come across a crisis situation, we would only expect you to flag it to our professional team who will escalate it if needed.

“I've enjoyed my experience as a Buddy because I'm a person who wants to help and put a smile on someone else's face if possible.”
WarriorCat, 25
